Bible Question: Genesis

Bible Question: Genesis

by Mark
(Nebraska)

This is a Bible question about Genesis.

This question isn't necessarily a question of life issues..its more of a question concerning the text of the Bible.

In genesis 2:25 it says that if Adam and Eve were to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil they would "surely die."

Well it's clear that they ate of that tree correct? Well, then why didn't they die?

Am I perhaps mis-reading the intended point? Is this a contradiction, or did God just let them of the hook?

In no way a contradiction...

Hi Mark,

I think the passage that you are referring to is "But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and blessing and calamity you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die." Genesis 2:17 (AMP)

Though it may appear to be a contradiction, it actually is not.

There are two kinds of death, spiritual death and physical death. The real death, the spiritual death, occurs when we are separated from God. For Adam and Eve, that death happened instantly. The connection and intimate relationship that they once had with God was ruined. The only way to bring mankind back from that spiritual death was through Jesus Christ.

Physically, Adam and Eve were created to live for ever. The had been eating of the tree of life, which, if they continued to enjoy its fruits, would have kept them alive through out eternity.

The moment that they bit the apple, they began to die physically. The scripture does not say they will die instantly, but that they would die - something that they were not supposed to ever do.

Though they lived long lives, they did eventually die as God had warned them.

I hope that answers your question!

God Bless!
Ameerah
