Bible Question: Thou Shalt Not Covet?

Bible Question: Thou Shalt Not Covet?

Was doing a bible study and came to the realization that desire was about "an instinct from the emotions to want something", just like wish was "an instinct from the mind to want something".

I am finding it challenging to put that into perspective for the 10th commandment.

If I interpret it, it means that if someone owns a home, a car, has a family, goes to church and has the Holy Spirit with them it means that I am not supposed to desire any of those. Would appreciate any feedback on this. Thanks and God bless.

Though shalt not covet
by: Anonymous

If you keep your eyes on God and his will for your life, you will not have time to covet what someone else has. Our responsibility is to keep our lives in tune with God. God did not mean for all of us to have the same things in life. We each have different blessings in our lives and each of us has the responsibility to use them to glorify God. God will bless you richly if you use what you have for His glory and not spend time wanting something that you probably will not ever have. God's will for our lives is the only thing that will bring a rich satisfying life. If you are not satisfied with what you have, then you ned to search deeper in your soul and find what it is God wants of your life.

Coveting is not just wanting something
by: Ameerah

When God is telling us not to covet what someone else has, it means that we should not be envious. We should be seeking His kingdom first and His will for our lives. Our eyes should be so focused on Him that we know that He will supply our every need and we are not concerned with what any one else has because we just want what He has for us.

So, it is not simply saying that you have a desire a better house to raise your children in, it is allowing that desire to become your focus instead of God being your focus. Coveting is things based and not God based, even if it is coveting things of God. If you are coveting someone else's anointing to teach or to sing, you are desiring the gift rather than the Giver. You are so focused on the thing that you haven't stopped to develop enough closeness with Him so that He can give you what He has for YOU.

I hope that answers your question.
