Let’s examine this scripture a bit more closely for a clearer
understanding of how you go about receiving the Holy Spirit.
So, what is your part?
1. Really LOVE Him.
2. Keep His commands. (John 14:15)
What is His part?
1. He will ask the Father,
2. He will give you the Comforter (John 14:16)
If loving Jesus and following His commands is all we have to do to have access to the Holy Spirit, why are so many Christians living without this spiritual powerhouse? Why are more of us not receiving the Holy Spirit?
Sometimes, we do not obey the commands of God, and do not realize we have sinned. The command may be from the Bible. But, often, the commands are the whispers of the Holy Spirit as He speaks to you personally within your heart.
If we constantly dismiss His advice and counsel, why would He keep hanging around? Until we repent of our disobedience as sin, the Holy Spirit’s power is not accessible to us.
As I talked about in Becoming God's Masterpiece, there are also certain things that many Christians have hidden in their hearts that separate them from the Spirit of God. Things like shame and unforgiveness. Even past pains that we have tried to cover up, but have never fully allowed to heal can stand in the way of us really walking in God's Spirit. The list of these hidden walls that we have built up ourselves is longer than you might think.
Another reason people live without the Holy Spirit is that they are deceived by Satan into thinking that having access to this gift is only for special people. But this is a lie. It is just a way to keep you powerless.
Not only does not accessing the Holy Spirit keep you powerless against the enemy’s attacks, but it makes you powerless in reaching out and making a huge impact for God. God is no respecter of persons. He said:
If you feel, in your heart, that you have
never really received the
Holy Spirit, then take a second right now and simply take God at His
Word - Ask Him for It. If the Bible makes it that simple, there is no
reason we should try to complicate it.
Sometimes, depending on our personalities and personal experience, we feel this strange need to be “INDEPENDENT.” We constantly bang our heads against the wall before we realize what we are doing isn’t working.
Part of the ministry of the Holy Spirit in your life is to help you when you cannot help yourself. But, it is your responsibility to stop what you are doing, and ask for assistance.
