Confused by Speaking in Tougues

I have spoken in tongues but had brought into the lie of satan that I was making it up,because i do not understand what I am speaking.

Am I suppose to understand what I am saying?

I commend you all for the comments on "speaking in tongues"
I would first like to put the subject in context.

1) The Holy Spirit has been and always will be influencing Mankind {Genesis 1:2}
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

2) Mankind is a living spirit {Genesis 2:7}
"And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."

3)We are spirit, body and soul.

4) Mankind's spoken language was confused and become diverse in nature and thought {Genesis 11:1-9}

The ability to speak in other languages miraculously is a sign to UNBELIEVERS not believers.{1 Corinthians 14:2}Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

The Greek term Glossolalia has the closest translation of Modern English "languages"

For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

1 Corinthians 14:

3But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

4He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

5I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

6Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

These are the Apostle Paul's words.

In summary Focus on the fruits of the Spirit "peace, patience, joy , longsuffering etc.

Please note the Holy Spirit STILL today does miraculous events where someone speaking/ preaching in spanish is understood by one who only understands english,

This very thing happened to me while serving as a missionary in the Dominican Republic in 2003.

You may at some time experience this phenomena but it is NOT learned , practiced, or conjured up by well meaning Christians IT is a WORK of the Holy Spirit not someone who is babbleing in an emotional frenzy drawing attenting to themselves.

Be Blessed and May the Holy Spirit direct you to the TRUTH concerning this question.

Amen, as with any language, it has be used so that it will grow. As you begin to fellowship by praying in the spirit, your language will flourish. Remember when praying in the spirit (speaking in tongues) we are not speaking to man, but to God.

Praying in Tongues is between you and the Lord

I realize that it can be very intimidating to be in a service where mostly everyone is praying in the spirit. Luckily, the church that I attended at the time did not attempt to force the issue but to teach about what praying in the spirit can do. The Holy Spirit interceeds for us in moanings and utterances that we can not understand, likewise, our praying in the spirit is a special language given by the Father that enters you into the Spirit realm.

The evening that I received the gift of tongues, I wanted to communicate with the Lord in a special way and I went forward not thinking of how it sounds or looks. When we take our eyes off of others and place all on our father, the joy of being in the spirit will outweigh our doubts.

Pray in TONGUE

This is really confusing for me too. I've been prayed upon by friends 3 times so i could receive the gift of praying in tongue. I'm not sure what i pray is truely spiritual lead??? All i know is i'm frustrated bec i felt like faking yet i wanted it so much just like others to be able to pray in tongue with ease. I's taught ta-ta-ta...ba-ba-ba-..at the beginning..i once sense the tongue roll uncontrollably in one of my deliverance session and that's ..no more...i tried so hard later so i feel like i'm just being copy cat..sinbala..n very forceful in praying in tongue...so i deeply thinking i'm not lead by the holy spirit and too aware of myself! And it's so wrong. My church people pray in tongue publicly during the worshipping service. I know some r pretty real but many just follow and not real at all..What can i do to be able to pray in tongue?? If i can't pray in tongue is it normal? Does every1 receive the gift of speaking in tongue as a christian? Please i think i need a big help from Ameerah here.thanks.God bless.Karen

The Holy Spirit Intercedes for us

Hi Claudette,

When we are speaking in tongues, really, the Holy Spirit is speaking though us. The Bible says that He is interceding for us.

The Bible also says that there are some that are given the gift of interpreting tongues, but not everyone has that specific gift of the Spirit. So, there may be times where you are praying in the Spirit and you do not know what you are saying. But, God knows exactly what you are saying. And, because it comes from the Spirit of God inside of you, it is always in line with God's perfect will for you.

You are right that the enemy will lie to us about speaking in tongues and say that we are making it up. But, we definitely are not!

Continue to pray in the Spirit by faith, and you will open the door for God to do mighty things in your life!
